The holiday season calls for celebrations and parties. It is a merry and joyous season that everyone celebrates with their families, friends, and co-workers.
Celebrations will never be complete without foods and drinks, and traditional holiday decorations. However, accidents cannot be avoided which can result to holiday stains on your carpet, table cloth, curtains, and napkins. The aftermath of office parties are no exception. Stained rugs, carpets, curtains, and tablecloths are very much common after office dinner parties.
Common Holiday Stains and How to Clean Them
Holiday stains can come from your holiday decorations, food, and drinks. Here are some holiday stains that you should watch out for, and how you can remedy them.
-
Candle Wax
Candles are common holiday decorations, and are often used to add a dramatic appeal to a table setup. However, melted wax on your table tops looks unsightly, not dramatic. You can remove melted wax on textiles right away or when it has already hardened. For fabrics, it is best to let the wax harden. Scrape off as much as dried wax as possible. Then iron on low setting with several layers of paper towels placed over and beneath the stained area. Depending on how big the wax spill is, you may need to rotate the paper as it becomes saturated. You can use oil solvents to remove any residue on the fabric.
-
Tree Sap
Sap stains can come from your holiday decorations, such as trees, wreaths and other decorations. You can dab mineral spirits or oil solvents on the stain. This will work for both washable and non-washable fabrics. Then follow through with laundry detergent.
-
Red or White Wine Stain
Celebrations and parties will not be complete without wine. Wine stains are one of the most common holiday stains. For washable fabrics stained with red wine, soak spot with denatured alcohol and flush with white vinegar. For more sturdy materials, such as carpeting, you can use salt. Pour a small mound of salt on the stained area. Let it sit as the salt absorbs the fresh wine stain.
For stains from white wine, flush the stained area with cool water. For non-washable fabrics, just dab the area with cool water.
-
Coffee and Tea Stain
Coffee stains are more like your everyday stain, but that does not mean they are not common during the holidays. Nothing brings the need for a warm cup of coffee more like the cold weather. For washable fabrics, you can flush the stain with white vinegar until the color is gone. You can dab white vinegar on the stain for non-washable fabrics.
In the case of tea stains, you can flush the stain with lemon juice. If the tea has sugar, follow up with a flush of water. You can just dab some lemon juice on the tea stain for non-washable fabrics.
-
Chocolate
Chocolate stains can come from chocolate syrup or a cup of hot chocolate. While it is tempting to lick off that sweet chocolate off the table, stop. You can use an instant stain remover on the stain and wash the fabric under cold running water.
For non-washable fabrics, use an oil solvent for grease, and rinse. If there is some remaining stain, dab with vinegar until it is gone. Then dab with cool water afterwards.
-
Lipstick
Lipstick stains on napkins are very common. You can use rubbing alcohol to wipe the stain off. Dab the stain with a cotton ball soaked with rubbing alcohol. Be patient if it doesn’t come off quickly. Wash the stained napkin with laundry detergent and rinse in cold water.
-
Blood
Accidents can happen even in the merriest of celebrations. Carving accidents, or broken glasses may require you to clean out some blood stains. After necessary first aid and medical attention has been given to the injured, it is now time to deal with the stain. You can use hydrogen peroxide to remove blood stains. However, note that it can cause bleaching on some materials.
You may also use cold water and salt to remove blood stains. Wet the stained area, pour and rub the salt on the stain. Flush it with cold water afterwards.
