Green Cleaning

Do you work in a green workplace? Introducing and maintaining green initiatives in the workplace may seem daunting. However, with simple changes and solutions like recycling, a workplace can greatly impact on the environment. Continue reading to know more about 2023 recycling tips for your green initiatives.

What is recycling?

Workplaces produce volumes of waste daily, most of which employees can recycle easily.

Recycling is the process of collecting and converting waste materials and turning them into new products. The three phases of recycling are:

  1. Collection of recyclable materials
  2. Processing the materials at the processing facility
  3. Re-manufacturing at recycling plants

When done correctly, recycling can make a huge difference in the community and the environment. Some benefits of recycling are the following:

  • It conserves the environment. Less garbage ends up in the incineration plant and landfills when people recycle.
  • It produces more jobs and generates tax revenues for the government.
  • It reduces air and water pollution.
  • It lessens the need for raw materials to make new products. Therefore, recycling conserves resources and energy.

Some important things that you need to know:

  • According to the EPA, the average office worker generates about 2 pounds of paper and cardboard waste each day.
  • Americans used about 50 billion plastic water bottles in 2016. Only 23% of them were recycled, meaning the remaining ended up as trash.
  • Styrofoam products fill up 30 percent of landfills worldwide. In the United States alone, approximately 1,369 tons of Styrofoam are thrown away by Americans daily.
  • Aluminum cans can be infinitely recycled and are one of the easiest materials to recycle. However, tons of aluminum waste end up in landfills yearly.
  • Every year, more than 10 million tons of plastic are dumped in the oceans, creating a huge problem with marine resources.
  • According to a survey conducted by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, 66% of Americans would not recycle a product if it is hard or inconvenient.

2023 recycling tips for the workplace

Given that businesses contribute to a lot of waste, positive action can contribute to make the world a better place for future generations. Here are 2023 recycling tips that can be adapted in the workplace:

1. Have a clear workplace policy on recycling.

Business owners can put up posters or send emails about the workplace policy on recycling. But these are not enough. Ensure that the policies about recycling are in place and the workers are properly informed of the company’s efforts when it comes to recycling. Set up a meeting to formally inform the workers of the policy.

2. Educate the workers.

Even though recycling has been around for a long time now, many people are still unaware of which products are recyclable. Some also get confused as to where and how to recycle waste materials. Because of this, many recyclables end up in the trash bin, or a lot of trash goes to the recycle bins. Launch an information campaign at the start of the year to create awareness in the workplace.

3. Make recycling easy.

People generally only recycle if it is easy, so why not make it easy? For example, have a collection area in the office for papers, aluminum cans, plastic, and other recyclable materials. This way, it will be easier for office workers to put their waste in the proper bins. Also, ensure that the containers for recyclables have labels.

If the workplace is spacious and has different rooms, spread recycle bins around the office. Put recycle bins in the bathroom, kitchen or pantry area, and in common areas.

Put signs on the walls to remind workers of your office recycling initiatives.

4. Encourage participation.

Have monthly recycling goals in the workplace. You may also create a competition or recycling contest for more fun.

5. Go paperless.

If papers are really necessary, print double-sided (you’ll have less paper waste at the end of the year).

6. Have a policy of using reusable water bottles, coffee cups, and utensils instead of single-use plastic containers.

Reusable cups will help address the number of Styrofoam cups thrown away yearly by coffee drinkers.

7. Make a committee.

Forming a “green team” will ensure that the company’s recycling efforts will be successful. Moreover, the management will have less to worry about their recycling initiatives if there is a green team. The committee/team will be the ones to monitor the initiatives of the management.
